We host the videos, transcode them, and serve them to your website&#8217;s readers at the highest quality we can based on Internet speed. We also help monetize those views via our pre-roll advertisements.\n\n<!--more-->\n<h2>Why Should I\u00a0Run the Mediavine Video Player over YouTube?<\/h2>\nThose pre-roll advertisements tend to perform much better than embedding YouTube videos on your site because we run a balance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/skippable-vs-non-skippable-video-ads\/\">skippable and non-skippable ads.<\/a>..\n\n&#8230;but that&#8217;s also where we run into a less optimal user experience.\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1421\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Video-Ad.jpg\" alt=\"Video Ad\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Video-Ad.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Video-Ad-441x248.jpg 441w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/>\n<h3>It&#8217;s no secret that users hate pre-roll advertisements.<\/h3>\nThey&#8217;re\u00a0one of the top reasons users install ad blocking software. They&#8217;re also the main reason\u00a0that people\u00a0stop watching your content. Content that you worked very hard to produce.\n\nWhen ads are skippable, readers\u00a0are generally only forced to watch up to 5 seconds and can skip at any time after that. When ads are non-skippable,readers are forced to watch the full length of an advertisement, which can range from 10 seconds to minutes.\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/decide.jpg\" alt=\"making choices, the Mediavine way\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/decide.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/decide-441x248.jpg 441w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>As your ad management company, it&#8217;s our responsibility to choose where to set that maximum length.<\/h3>\nLike everything else with advertisements, it&#8217;s a balance of revenue versus user experience. The longer the ad, the more it pays. But you also see more users dropping off before the ad completes as ad length increases.\n<h3>This article is about our several month journey of A\/B testing to figure out exactly where to set that non-skippable pre-roll ad limit to find that perfect sweet spot of happy users, advertisers and publishers.<\/h3>\nFirst, we had to determine which metrics we were looking at to determine success.\n\nFor figuring out which users were finishing their non-skippable ads, we looked to the &#8220;<strong>completion rate<\/strong>&#8221; on videos which were click-to-play. That means only looking at non-skippable ads where the user was trying to get to the video at the end. We removed\u00a0autoplay, skippable ads, etc.\n\nBy measuring completion rate in that scenario, we were able to determine which users were willing to stick around to watch the video versus closing the player or backing out. That is\u00a0the closest stat there is\u00a0to quantify user experience, in our opinion.\n\nBelow you&#8217;ll find our results on various duration lengths from 1-30 seconds, and the percentage\u00a0of users that viewed the entire ad.\n<h2>Duration versus completion rate on non-skippable ads<\/h2>\n<table style=\"height: 205px; width: 285px;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"height: 24px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 123px; height: 24px;\"><strong>Duration<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 150px; height: 24px;\"><strong>Completion Rate<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 24px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 123px; height: 24px;\">1-5 seconds<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 150px; height: 24px;\">92.88%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 24px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 123px; height: 24px;\">6-10 seconds<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 150px; height: 24px;\">81.56%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 24px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 123px; height: 24px;\">11-15 seconds<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 150px; height: 24px;\">81.51%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 24px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 123px; height: 24px;\">16-20 seconds<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 150px; height: 24px;\">80.48%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 24px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 123px; height: 24px;\">21-25 seconds<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 150px; height: 24px;\">74.72%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 24.6562px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 123px; height: 24.6562px;\">26-30 seconds<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 150px; height: 24.6562px;\">69.53%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>So what did we find?<\/h2>\nIn a dream scenario, we&#8217;d only allow 0:05 because it would mean nearly 93% of our users would make it to the content.\n\nHowever, we unfortunately live in the land of reality where there&#8217;s <strong>not<\/strong> a ton of advertisers who are happy with 0:05 long ads, and not enough publishers who hate making money.\n\nOnce you went beyond 0:05 limit, there was surprisingly\u00a0negligible difference between \u00a00:10, 0:15 or 0:20 limits. Once you got to 0:30 or above, the numbers became <em>terrifying<\/em> how many readers\u00a0we would lose before they made it to our video.\n\n<em>Now we had our max durations to test.<\/em> If we were able to limit non-skippable ad length to really anything under 0:20 without much of a drop to revenue, it looks like we&#8217;d have our balance on the user experience side.\n<h3>We decided to run two A\/B tests.<\/h3>\nThese would compare all of our options\u00a0against a 0:30 ad, which tends to be the most popular pre-roll length due to popular television commercial lengths, and the absolute max as a network we could tolerate even thinking about setting the limit to.\n<h2>Impact on Revenue<\/h2>\n<table style=\"height: 93px; width: 525px;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 156px;\"><strong>Length<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 113px;\"><strong>Fill Rate<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 113px;\"><strong>CPM<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 121px;\"><strong>Revenue<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 156px;\">0:30 -&gt; 0.15<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 113px;\">-4.2%<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 113px;\">-9.1%<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 121px;\">-12.9%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 156px;\">0:30 -&gt; 0:20<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 113px;\">-4.2%<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 113px;\">-8.4%<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 121px;\">\u00a0-12.1%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h1>Conclusion<\/h1>\n12.9% or even a 12.1% reduction in revenue is generally pretty terrifying here at Mediavine, and never an option we would willingly take.\n\n<strong>However, more terrifying to us would be knowing that over 12% of users we leaving our videos.<\/strong> Those numbers to us indicate that any short term gains in revenue would likely be washed out by losing readers.\n<h1>We&#8217;re proud to announce that as of today, we&#8217;ve decided to limit all pre-roll advertisements to 0:20 at Mediavine.<\/h1>\nIf you see any ads longer than that, please report them to us.
