They\u2019re also a great identifier for your blog, especially if you happen to share it with a brand who wants to work with influencers!\r\n\r\nIn short, your business card can make or break a great impression.\r\n\r\nBefore I worked at Mediavine, I ran my own graphic design business, worked at several ad agencies and on other in-house teams. In short: I\u2019ve designed A LOT of business cards.\r\n\r\nIncluding ours! The Mediavine team picks up tons of cards at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/q2-2019-conference-recap\/\">conferences we attend<\/a> as well. I love thumbing through them to see people\u2019s ideas. (I\u2019m weird.)\r\n\r\nSuffice it to say, I\u2019ve collected a lot of tips along the way that I\u2019m sharing with you ahead of fall conference season.\r\n\r\nSo what should they look like? What should they include and not include?\r\n<h2>What to include on your business card<\/h2>\r\nThere are a few things every business card should have. Some of them are definitely optional. (I mean, who uses phones anymore when email is sufficient?!)\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Your name<\/strong> \u2014 You wouldn\u2019t believe how many people leave THEIR OWN NAME off. How will people know how to address you if they want to email or call you?<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Your logo or business name<\/strong> \u2014 If your blog\/business name is not your own name, your business name should be on your card.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>A tagline or your job title<\/strong> \u2014 Let people know what you do. It\u2019s not a resume, so keep it short.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Your contact information<\/strong> \u2014 So people can reach you! That should include your email address (it\u2019s almost 2020, you guys), your phone number if you don\u2019t mind getting calls and possibly your business or mailing address. But remember you will give these out to strangers!<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Your website<\/strong> \u2014 This is crucial. Don\u2019t miss this one. (Although I tend to give a pass if you have an email address with your website in it, like yourname@yoursite.com)<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Your social media info<\/strong> \u2014 If people want to connect with you immediately, this is the best way to make new friends on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter! Plus this is super handy for brands to follow you right away.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nHere\u2019s a quick example I made in Canva:\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13377 size-mv_create_no_ratio\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image1-735x420.jpg\" alt=\"Business card example from Alice Cho-Graham, for Mint To Be.\" width=\"735\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image1-735x420.jpg 735w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image1-441x252.jpg 441w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image1-768x439.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image1-806x460.jpg 806w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px\" \/>\r\n<h3>Show off your stuff!<\/h3>\r\nAs small business owners, we often don\u2019t have just one job title. A short and sweet tagline is a great way to let people know what you do! Think of it as a 1- to 6-word elevator pitch. Some example taglines:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Graphic designer &amp; food blogger<\/li>\r\n \t<li>DIY Blogger \u2022 Videographer \u2022 Speaker<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Food-focused travel blogger<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Don\u2019t use ONLY social media icons.<\/h3>\r\nThis is my #1 pet peeve when folks just put the app icon and no URL or @handle information along with it. If you have just the little Facebook icon in the corner, I can\u2019t click it! It\u2019s a piece of paper! ARGH!\r\n\r\nSeriously, it is a major frustration. But if you\u2019re handing that card to a brand, blogger or really ANYONE, you will want to make sure to tell them how to find you on those apps, and not just letting them know you are on those apps.\r\n<h3>Think two-sided.<\/h3>\r\nTwo-sided cards are usually more expensive, but often not by much. There are lots of ways you can show off your brand\u2019s personality.\r\n\r\nMany printers now offer a way to put multiple different photos or designs on the back of your cards, so each card is different from the others. This is a great way to show off your photography talent and give a quick glimpse at your style.\r\n\r\nYou could also just put your logo on the back, or an on-brand quote.\r\n\r\nI once received a card that had a \u201cNotes\u201d section on the back \u2014 the giver used it to write some things we talked about before handing it to me. So smart!\r\n\r\nHere\u2019s an example of a way you can incorporate photography on the front of a card:\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13378 size-mv_create_no_ratio\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image2-735x420.jpg\" alt=\"Business card example for Jana Johnson, for Always Away.\" width=\"735\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image2-735x420.jpg 735w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image2-441x252.jpg 441w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image2-768x439.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image2-806x460.jpg 806w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image2.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px\" \/>\r\n<h3>Enlist some help.<\/h3>\r\nHave a friend check over the design. Even when you write something habitually, it\u2019s easy to miss or invert numbers and letters.\r\n\r\nSince it\u2019s information you\u2019re used to typing, you might not even catch the typo, so a double check is always important. Ask your friend(s) to call your number, email your email address, visit your website and social accounts \u2014 just to make sure all that info checks out.\r\n<h3>Paper matters. Size matters. Special effects kinda matter.<\/h3>\r\nI\u2019m a print nerd, so bear with me. A thicker paper can make an impression, because it sticks out in a stack, and also shows you put a little more effort (and probably cash) into your business cards. A super thick paper (one that doesn\u2019t really bend) will be more spendy but will definitely stick out in a stack.\r\n\r\nIt drives me a little crazy though when I have a stack of business cards and there\u2019s a square one, or one that doesn\u2019t neatly fit in the stack. But! That person\u2019s card always stands out, so it\u2019s not a terrible thing!\r\n\r\nPersonally I prefer the standard size (3.5 in. x 2 in., vertical or horizontal), but you do you, boo!\r\n\r\nSpecial effects, like thick paper, embossing, foil stamping, spot gloss and letterpress printing are showstoppers you can use (if you can afford them). I also try to remember that my card will likely end up in someone\u2019s trash.\r\n\r\nEven for me \u2014 someone who LOVES all things printing and especially special effects \u2014 I don\u2019t necessarily feel the business card is the best place to be spendy.\r\n\r\nMy go-to for my own blog\u2019s cards (and often for the cards I design for clients \u2014 and Mediavine!) is a two-sided design, with info on one side and a photo, pattern or logo on the back. I always use a thicker paper and a matte finish, but I try not to break the bank.\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13380 size-mv_create_no_ratio\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image4-735x490.jpg\" alt=\"A stack of blank business cards.\" width=\"735\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image4-735x490.jpg 735w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image4-441x294.jpg 441w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image4-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image4-690x460.jpg 690w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image4.jpg 1999w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px\" \/>\r\n<h3>Where to print business cards<\/h3>\r\nFor myself, I use a local printer to save on shipping costs (and time), and often they charge a little less than the big name websites like Moo and Vistaprint. The downside with local printers is you need to order in large quantities, but at least you get to talk to a real person!\r\n\r\nThe big name websites are fine, though, and I\u2019ve definitely used them. They\u2019re usually fast, and they have customer service if something goes wrong. If you don\u2019t need the cards ASAP, they\u2019re actually pretty affordable. Which brings me to\u2026\r\n<h3>Order in enough time.<\/h3>\r\nIt should go without saying, but I\u2019m saying it. A classic mistake is to forget to order your cards well before the event!\r\n\r\nI\u2019ve met SO many people who neglected to order their cards, or they ordered them last minute and they weren\u2019t going to arrive on time. I even met someone who had them shipped to their hotel and they didn\u2019t arrive until after they left!\r\n\r\nThat\u2019s too risky for me!\r\n\r\nOnce you have a printer you like, make sure you know how much lead time they need. Fast shipping is expensive and defeats the purpose of getting an inexpensive set of cards.\r\n<h3>Pack your business cards.<\/h3>\r\nOne of our team members (I\u2019m not naming names!) frequently gets teased\/reminded before a trip because he\/she often forgets to pack them. (Love you, X!) But you? Be better! I keep a bag in my suitcase and never take it out \u2014 just to make sure I always have a few.\r\n\r\nI hope this helps you design better business cards for your blog!
