Knowing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/how-to-use-nofollow\/\">how to use No-Follow<\/a> is an important part of getting your linking strategy right.<\/span>\n<h2><b>Why Do We Use No-Follow?<\/b><\/h2>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many, many years ago (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/preventing-comment-spam.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all the way back in 2005<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) Google originally announced this attribute as a way to help limit incoming spam links. Most problematically were spam bots leaving comments on websites, looking for link juice back to their own website.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By creating an attribute that allowed you to communicate directly to the search engine that you don\u2019t want to give any authority or clout to a specific link, you get more control of your website, and your ability to do SEO effectively.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem is that many people then think that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">every<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> outbound link on your website should be no-followed to only allow internal links to receive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/the-art-of-giving-and-receiving-backlinks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">backlink clout<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While that\u2019s certainly one way to interpret Google\u2019s suggested use of the tool, I\u2019d like to argue that it\u2019s not in the spirit of what was intended.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can look no further than <a href=\"https:\/\/webmasters.googleblog.com\/2019\/09\/evolving-nofollow-new-ways-to-identify.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google\u2019s 2019 update<\/a> to the no-follow attribute, adding <b><code>\"rel=sponsored\"<\/code><\/b> and <b><code>\"rel=ugc\"<\/code><\/b>, intended to help further qualify how you want Google to view a hyperlink to see that they\u2019re looking for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">context<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in outbound links, not just whether or not you want that link to have some additional authority passed on by your choice to link to a page.<\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/female-blogger.jpg\" alt=\"female blogger\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/female-blogger.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/female-blogger-441x294.jpg 441w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/female-blogger-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/female-blogger-690x460.jpg 690w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/female-blogger-735x490.jpg 735w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>\n<h2><b>When To Use No-Follow (Or Sponsored, Or UGC)<\/b><\/h2>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a blog author, when you write your content and choose to link within it, you are providing long term details to Google about what is important in relation to the content you\u2019ve written.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For years, Google has asked that if you are paid to include a link in your content, that it be marked No-Follow. But that didn\u2019t really provide enough context.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could also No-Follow a link to a site that seemed to have information your readers might find useful, but you weren\u2019t sure how good the site was. And for years, every comment link has been No-Followed too.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meaning that Google was blind to the different situations that might lead to an author choosing to No-Follow, and therefore blind to the additional context that might be found in the content they are indexing.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the addition of these new attributes, it\u2019s even easier to understand as the author when to use which attribute. We\u2019ve created a handy dandy chart for you, in addition to the plain text below.<\/span>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b><code>\"rel=no-follow\"<\/code><\/b><\/td>\n<td>Use this attribute when you want search engine crawlers to, for all intents and purposes, ignore that this link exists. They still see it, but they do not use it in their contextual analysis.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b><code>\"rel=sponsored\"<\/code><\/b><\/td>\n<td>Use this attribute to tell Google that the link you\u2019re providing was paid for by the company or person at the other end of the hyperlink. Make more content instead. Google has specifically stated:\u00a0<\/span>\n<blockquote><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No. If you use nofollow now as a way to block sponsored links, or to signify that you don\u2019t vouch for a page you link to, that will continue to be supported. There\u2019s absolutely no need to change any nofollow links that you already have. <\/span>\n\n<strong>&#8211; Google&#8217;s 2019 No-Follow Update<\/strong><\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any time that you can provide a search engine with more context, it\u2019s a good thing.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While using these new types of No-Follow attributes in your new content won\u2019t lead to improved ranking specifically, more data always means that a crawler might decide your content fits the bill better than a competitor based on other ranking factors thanks to the extra context it has.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use these attributes as best practice going forward, in all of your newest blog posts. If you\u2019re in an old one updating links anyway, consider fixing these since you\u2019re already there.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By no means is it necessary to go back and update everything, nor is it going to lead to increased rankings if you do. Use your time wisely, and these attributes going forward as you make new content.<\/span><\/section>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<section class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained
