Let me formally introduce myself. I\u2019m Cynthia, Director of Business Intelligence for Mediavine. I work behind the scenes with Eric, Nicole, Heather and Brad (as well as the rest of the amazing Mediavine team). <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My role is to analyze new opportunities, and offer performance suggestions and troubleshooting guidance to our product, revenue and publisher support teams. So when I was<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> approached to write something for our publishers,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I shockingly decided to talk about performance and analyzing it.<\/span>\n<h2><b>What is Performance?<\/b><\/h2>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you consider performance? Is it how you\u2019re tracking compared to a goal you set? How you\u2019re performing compared to another website? Week over week? Year over year?<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are so many different ways to monitor and analyze performance. Do you want to hit 1 million sessions? Do you want to increase your traffic from social media? Focus your analysis on what will help you achieve your goal.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most likely, there will be more than one step to take, and more than one action needed to reach your ultimate goal. This is very typical. Just keep your goal in mind as you monitor results.<\/span>\n\n<strong>Helpful Tip:<\/strong>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t make the ultimate goal unreachable. It\u2019s also easier if you build a number into your goal, e.g. \u201cIncrease revenue 10%\u201d vs. \u201cMake more money.\u201d<\/span>\n\n<em>For the sake of this blog post, we&#8217;re setting an ultimate goal for you to follow along with: <\/em>\n\n<em>Reach 1 million sessions per month.<\/em>\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/3-action-items-that-will-get-you-massive-traffic\/\">Growing site traffic is a great goal<\/a>. (Go you!) We have a number of resources to guide you on the road to achieving your goals.\n\nIn this scenario, let&#8217;s say we worked on increasing pagespeed and it went up 20%! (Here&#8217;s a post on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavines-pagespeed-resources\/\">how to increase pagespeed<\/a>.)\n\nWe&#8217;ll use this example throughout the steps to help guide you through your own analysis. Now we&#8217;ll look at how increasing pagespeed helped us attain our ultimate goal of 1 million sessions per month.\n\nNOTE: You can follow these steps for <em>any<\/em>\u00a0goal, so use our example as a jumping off point as you follow the rest of the steps.\n<h3><b>Step 2: What Question Do You Want to Answer?<\/b><\/h3>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, determine the question you want an answer to.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It could be really simple, such as \u201cHow many sessions did I have yesterday?\u201d It could be more complex, such as \u201cHas changing pagespeed impacted my session growth?\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Figure out the question before looking at the numbers. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This may sound backwards, especially if you only have a specific data set, but there are times that seeing the data could influence your question.<\/span>\n\n<strong>Helpful Tip:<\/strong>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be specific. Asking something like \u201cDid my revenue go up?\u201d is generic and may not lead to results that can help guide you.<\/span>\n\n<em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our Example Question:<\/span><\/em>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow much have my sessions grown since my pagespeed went up 20%?\u201d<\/span>\n<h3><b>Step 3: Do I Have the Data I Need?<\/b><\/h3>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next step is figuring out if you have the data you need. In certain cases, you might not. If that&#8217;s true, there are still ways to infer answers (we\u2019ll go over some of these later).<\/span>\n\n<strong>Helpful Tip:<\/strong>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focusing on 2-3 things helps you zero in on the question. Too much data can create noise and not provide actionable insights.<\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our Example Data:<\/span><\/i>\n<ul>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Date pagespeed changed (10\/1\/2019)<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pagespeed before 10\/1\/2019<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pagespeed after 10\/1\/2019<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sessions by Day<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Step 4: What Do I Want to Compare?<\/b><\/h3>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re looking at performance, you probably want to compare it with something, most likely a date range.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind that multiple factors might impact the comparison. For example, Sunday performance differs from Monday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/ad-revenue-seasons\/\">January performs differently than June<\/a>, Google Search traffic performs better than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/pinterest-mistakes\/\">Pinterest<\/a>, and so on.<\/span>\n\n<strong>Helpful Tip:<\/strong>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focus on one or two comparisons. Also make sure you give the data time to adjust to any changes you have made.<\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our Example Metrics:<\/span><\/i>\n<ul>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7 Day period before change (9\/22\/2019-9\/28\/2019)<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7 Day period after change, plus a few weeks (10\/13\/2019-10\/19\/2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Step 5: What Metrics Will Help Answer My Question?<\/b><\/h3>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We could throw out many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/ad-tech-glossary\/\">three-letter acronyms<\/a>, but which ones mean something to you? If your question is \u201cHas changing pagespeed impacted my session growth?\u201d then looking at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/cpms-ecpms\/\">CPM<\/a> won\u2019t help you.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, there are a lot of metrics. Always focus on the question you want to answer. Obvious as it sounds, it&#8217;s easy to spiral down into a rabbit hole without that focus.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Useful metrics can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-rpm\/\">RPM<\/a>, CPM, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/how-to-find-sessions-in-google-analytics\/\">Sessions<\/a>, Revenue, Pageviews and\/or Impressions. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also break each of these down by Geo, Device Category, Day of Week, Traffic Source, etc.<\/span>\n\n<strong>Helpful Tip:<\/strong>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure the metrics link exactly to your question. CPMs may be affected by session growth, but session growth won\u2019t be impacted by CPMs.<\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our Example Metrics:<\/span><\/i>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Date, Sessions<\/span>\n<h3><b>Step 6: How to I Analyze the Data?<\/b><\/h3>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many different ways to analyze data. One that is usually very effective is % change. For example, if your RPM changes from $25 to $30, the change would be 20% growth.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To calculate % change, take the number you want to compare ($30 in the above example), subtract the number you\u2019re comparing to ($25), and divide the answer ($5) by the number you\u2019re comparing to ($25):<\/span>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">($30-25) \/ <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">($25) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">= .2 = 20%<\/span><\/p>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Helpful Tip:<\/strong> <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps you had an article go viral and this could account for your session growth. Always look to see if there are outlying factors that could have influenced results.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, keep track of any changes you might have made, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/how-to-do-a-plugin-self-audit\/\">adding or removing a plugin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavine-in-content-ad-settings-how-to-self-audit-for-best-results\/\">changing ad settings<\/a>, etc. Any of these might skew the data.<\/span>\n\n<em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our Example:<\/span><\/em>\n<ul>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sessions between 9\/22 &#8211; 9\/28: 105,000<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sessions between 10\/13 &#8211; 10\/19 &#8211; 125,000<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(125,000 &#8211; 105,000) \/ (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">105,000) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">= .19 = 19% session growth<\/span><\/p>\n<b>Advanced Tips<\/b>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to piece out if data is correlated. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just because a bird flies by your window doesn\u2019t mean your hair is turning gray (that might just be my hair &#8230; I blame my kids). Two things that have no relationship can occur simultaneously.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep a spreadsheet of any changes you make with plugins, layouts, styles, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-seo-introducing-the-mediavine-search-engine-optimization-series\/\">SEO<\/a>, etc. with dates. This gives you historical reference points that you may not remember a month from now.<\/span>\n\n<b>Inferring Data<\/b>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are times when you don\u2019t have all the data in front of you. For example, if you\u2019ve increased your Google traffic due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavines-seo-resources\/\">SEO improvements<\/a>, you might also see an increase in RPM using the above tools.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you don\u2019t have Google session RPM broken out, you can use the data in this article to help infer that RPM has increased because Google sessions increased, illustrating the value of improving SEO.<\/span>\n\n<em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some basic data points to keep in mind when looking through data:<\/span><\/em>\n\n<b>Referral Source Value<\/b>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most publishers know that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/why-all-traffic-doesnt-monetize-the-same\/\">not all traffic is created equal<\/a>. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be surprised at just how much more some referral sources are worth to your site than others, though. Keep that in mind when you look to increase your users.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below is a graph showing the value of sources compared to one another. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, Google traffic is worth 10.1% more than average. If you grow Google traffic, your RPM would be impacted positively, especially compared to increasing your traffic from Instagram.<\/span>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14240\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/sources-300x300.png\" alt=\"A graph showing the value of various traffic sources, in comparison to the average. See if you can figure out which of those two days performs better for your site.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can use this information to help inform you on when to post updates on social media, add blog posts, etc., to maximize revenue. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good luck!
