How did it go out of business?<\/h2>\nIgnitionOne is a DSP that has been around since 2004. (See our article on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-a-dsp\/\">what is a DSP<\/a> for the basics on how they work.)\n\nFifteen years in ad tech makes IgnitionOne, which wholly owns Netmining, one of the early pioneers in the ad tech space.\n\nWhat brought about its downfall in 2019?\n\nIn a letter to shareholders last week, IgnitionOne announced it sold its last assets and would \u201cultimately dissolve the company.\u201d\n\nCEO Will Margiloff said the past year saw record growth and revenue, but the company was still unable to secure a needed credit line.\n\nHow could a company that was recently seeing strong growth and revenue fail? Again, it all comes down to efficiency.\n\nThe programmatic industry is rapidly maturing, with changes like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-header-bidding\/\">header bidding<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/google-first-price-auction-what-it-means-for-publishers\/\">first price auctions<\/a> and supply path optimization.\n\nWith these advancements, crucial facets of online advertising will run more smoothly \u2014 but we will need fewer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-an-ssp\/\">SSPs<\/a> and DSPs.\n\nIncreased competition between these ad partners is intensifying as the efficiency we&#8217;re seeing comes at the cost of profits.\n\nMargiloff blamed the changing landscape in his letter, citing &#8220;lots of reasons why&#8221; IgnitionOne could not survive, but &#8220;foremost is the fact that the grounds have shifted in the digital market and we couldn&#8217;t get to safer ground in time.&#8221;\n\nHow we interpret that is they were reliant on lines of credit and injections of capital to continue to fuel growth, and that despite their best efforts, couldn&#8217;t grow fast enough to sustain the business.\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8792 size-mv_create_no_ratio\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/laptop-typing-735x491.png\" alt=\"A man's hands typing on a laptop computer.\" width=\"735\" height=\"491\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/laptop-typing-735x491.png 735w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/laptop-typing-441x294.png 441w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/laptop-typing-768x513.png 768w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/laptop-typing-689x460.png 689w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/laptop-typing.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px\" \/>\n<h2>So Ignition One is Closing. What happens now?<\/h2>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/adtech-company-ignitionone-shuts-down-sends-letter-to-shareholders-2019-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IgnitionOne has sold off its assets<\/a> to a combination of Zeta Global and Publicis Media, two big names in the industry.\n\nThe bad news is that despite its financial problems, IgnitionOne continued to buy ad impressions through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-an-ad-exchange\/\">ad exchanges<\/a> \u2014 and, through those exchanges, publisher sites, including Mediavine \u2014 until the end.\n<h2>Will IgnitionOne pay for the impressions it served?<\/h2>\nIn short, no. We will not take back any revenue earned by publishers before the collapse of IgnitionOne and Netmining.\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavine-revenue-share-update\/\">Mediavine&#8217;s revenue share<\/a> for publishers has a ceiling of 90% because we&#8217;re committed to running a sustainable business ourselves, on top of ensuring that our publishers earn the top eCPMs and RPMs in the industry.\n\nWe intend to keep it that way. It\u2019s important to note that there has never been a change as far as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/who-owns-mediavine\/\">who owns Mediavine<\/a>. We have been independently owned and operated since 2004 with no outside investment or credit lines.\n\nSorry ad tech world.
