Here&#8217;s a preview of some of the big things you can expect from Mediavine in 2020, many of which we touched on at our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/keeping-it-weird-at-mvcon-austin\/\">Austin conference<\/a> in November.<!--more-->\n<h2>Ad Management<\/h2>\nOn the advertising front, we\u2019re somewhat limited in what we can share due to the competitive nature of our field.\n\nHowever, we can divulge some important improvements with respect to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/an-introduction-to-ads\/\">Mediavine ads<\/a> and our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavine-script-wrapper-2-0-is-live-heres-what-that-is-and-why-its-awesome\/\">Script Wrapper<\/a>:\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8740 size-mv_create_no_ratio\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/coding-computing-735x490.png\" alt=\"Man's hands typing on a laptop computer\" width=\"735\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/coding-computing-735x490.png 735w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/coding-computing-441x294.png 441w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/coding-computing-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/coding-computing-690x460.png 690w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/coding-computing.png 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px\" \/>\n<h3>Privacy<\/h3>\nWith movements like the EU&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/gdpr-resource-hub\/\">GDPR<\/a> and the newly-enacted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-ccpa-what-do-mediavine-publishers-need-to-do-about-it\/\">CCPA<\/a> in California \u2014 likely a harbinger of wider changes to come throughout the U.S. \u2014 it&#8217;s clear that privacy concerns are re-shaping the online advertising industry.\n\nBy and large, this is a good thing and one we are prepared for.\n\nMediavine&#8217;s Script Wrapper offers solutions in the form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavine-cmp-our-commitment-to-gdpr-transparency-and-privacy\/\">Consent Management Platforms (CMP)<\/a> \u2014 free tools to help our publishers comply with these sweeping new regulations when it comes to digital ads and more.\n\nAs countries, states and regulatory entities hone in on user tracking, programmatic advertising will continue to change.\n\nFortunately, our company and by extension, our Script Wrapper, will adapt to these and other upcoming policies such as Google Chrome\u2019s new approach to third party <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-are-cookies-and-why-do-they-matter-for-advertising\/\">cookies<\/a>.\n<h3>Speed<\/h3>\nAs the original creators of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/optimize-ads-for-mobile-pagespeed\/\">Optimize for Pagespeed<\/a> mode in our Script Wrapper, Mediavine&#8217;s obsession with site speed should go without saying at this juncture. But that doesn&#8217;t mean we&#8217;re resting on our laurels.\n\nIn general, if you think of each advertisement as running its own mini-website within your site, you realize just how much potential there is for them to slow down your site \u2014 and how much more we can do to prevent this.\n\nSpeed is major factor when it comes to SEO and as a result, many publishers take action to boost pagespeed for the Google rankings alone. That&#8217;s great, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/why-page-speed-matters\/\">improving pagespeed<\/a> is important for many additional reasons.\n\nA faster site will mean superior user experiences, longer average session duration, reduced bounce rates and optimal advertising performance.\n\n<em>In short, a faster site means more money in your pocket.<\/em>\n\nWith this in mind, Mediavine is planning even more speed optimizations for the Script Wrapper, minimizing its initial impact on page load and further optimizing its efficiency throughout your users&#8217; sessions.\n\nBy embracing new technologies such as web chunking and adopting best practices from Chrome and other important web standard-bearers, we&#8217;re confident in our ability to speed up the Wrapper throughout 2020.\n\nAdditionally, an exciting behind-the-scenes speed project that we hope will come to fruition this year is our attempt to move more of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-header-bidding\/\">header bidding<\/a> partners from client side to server side.\n\nFor those wondering what any of that means, it&#8217;s something that&#8217;s been in the works for some time, a separate blog post in the making and a topic you can expect to hear a lot more about later this year.\n<h3>Performance<\/h3>\nHaving a fast site that&#8217;s compliant with the privacy laws of the land is great, but we know revenue is the bottom line (literally and figuratively) \u2014 and we&#8217;re excited to say that&#8217;s where the biggest improvements to the Wrapper come in.\n\nIn 2019, Google moved to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/google-first-price-auction-what-it-means-for-publishers\/\">first price auction<\/a>, an industry change that we&#8217;ve already been adjusting for. We&#8217;re continuing to analyze and improve our flooring dynamics for advertisers to maximize revenue in this first-price world.\n\nWe\u2019re also partnering with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavine-partners-with-gumgum-as-verity-early-adopter\/\">GumGum Verity<\/a> to bring contextual advertising to Mediavine&#8217;s inventory. This will ensure top performance in a privacy-focused ecosystem where targeting content is more sustainable than targeting users.\n\nWhat drives up prices in any auction system is competition. Improving how that money is reported onscreen!\n\nOkay, maybe not quite as exciting, but a new version of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavine-dashboard-reporting\/\">Mediavine Dashboard<\/a> should be ready for beta testing in the first quarter of 2020. In addition to a sleek new look, it includes features that many of you have requested for years.\n\nMost significantly, the new Dashboard is built upon the same technology as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavine-create\/\">Create<\/a> and will allow our full development team to release new features to the Dashboard at a faster pace than in the past.\n<h3>Okay, so what are the new features?<\/h3>\nDate comparisons, first of all. A very popular request from our publisher community, this will allow you to see how 2020 compares to 2019, or any specific date range you want!\n\nSuffice it to say, this should make it much easier to track revenue over time and see how changes to your site impact earning potential.\n\nOh, and we heard a few of you wanted to see RPMs and revenue on a page-level basis. Guess what? The new dashboard&#8217;s got that too!\n\nWith this feature, you&#8217;ll finally be able to see how individual pages are performing revenue-wise and optimize where you need to most.\n\nStay tuned for much more information on this one upon its official reveal.\n<h2>Mediavine Video Player<\/h2>\nOne Year of Video after another eventually morphed into the Decade of Video at Mediavine, and with the calendar now saying 2020, we suppose it&#8217;s a new Decade of Video.\n\nIn any case, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavine-video-player-2-0-an-introduction\/\">Mediavine Video Player<\/a> had a big 2019 with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/video-player-unification\/\">unification of the player<\/a>, but that was just the beginning. Like the Script Wrapper, we\u2019re continuing to optimize video speed in 2020.\n\nVideo streaming is huge in terms of bandwidth. It can slow down sites more than images and most other aspects of your site, which is why we built <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/lazy-loading-video-player\/\">lazy loading<\/a> into our Video Player last year.\n\nIn the coming months, we\u2019re taking these efforts up a notch, sharing even more code between the Video Player and Script Wrapper to optimize how quickly everything loads on your pages.\n\nWe\u2019ll also be working on further optimizing video streaming \u2014 beyond our current optimizations \u2014 to make sure your videos load as fast as possible.\n<h3>Oh, did we mention PLAYLISTS?<\/h3>\nWith the recent launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/featured-video-playlists-an-easy-path-to-major-revenue-growth\/\">featured video playlists<\/a>, we also teased that first-class playlist support is coming soon, and it is.\n\nThanks to the new Mediavine Dashboard and some improvements to the Video Player, you\u2019ll soon be able to create your own playlists, embed them in posts and even run them as your featured playlists.\n\nPerformance-wise, we expect the Video Player to produce the biggest gains.\n\nAs with display, our server-side solution should allow us to add even more buyers to the video auction, improving both CPMs and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/fill-rate-tool\/\">fill rates<\/a> for the highest earning ad units on your site \u2014 video ads.\n\nThat&#8217;s it for now on the advertising side, but we&#8217;re far from done overall.\n\nWhat\u2019s coming your way as Mediavine continues to Grow (sorry) its suite of WordPress plugins? Either way it will soon be in its testing phase.\n\nWith the Create index builder, you\u2019ll be able to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wordpress-gutenberg-tutorial\/\">Gutenberg<\/a> to build your own beautiful, interactive index pages for recipes, how-to cards, and more.\n\nBy going with the Gutenberg block approach, we\u2019re effectively giving you a powerful page-builder for all your cards in Create. Much like we saw with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/using-multiple-create-cards\/\">Lists<\/a>, we can\u2019t wait to see how you all use index blocks in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/creative-ways-to-use-create\/\">creative ways<\/a>.\n\nWe know there\u2019s this other recipe card plugin some publishers are running. The two most common explanations for this are the metric\/imperial conversion and dynamic serving sizes.\n\nWell, we&#8217;re excited to say that along with an improved nutrition calculation interface, all of these features are coming this year.\n\nWhile we\u2019ll certainly understand if you still want to run another recipe card, we don\u2019t want these features \u2014 or lack thereof \u2014 to be the reason you\u2019re holding back from jumping on the Create bandwagon.\n\nOf all recipe cards, Create is the fastest, easiest-to-use and most optimized for revenue. We want to make sure every Mediavine publisher has the tools they need to take advantage.\n\nIn addition, we plan on adding support within Create for new officially recognized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-schema\/\">Google Schema<\/a> object types in 2020. We recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavine-launches-grow-with-the-acquisition-of-social-pug-and-optin-hound-wordpress-plugins\/\">acquired Social Pug<\/a> and have been transitioning the product to its new identity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/exciting-news-grow-social-and-grow-social-pro-now-under-nerdpress-ownership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grow Social<\/a>.*\n\nWhy the new name? Because as terrific as Social Pug was, our vision for Grow Social is much bigger than social sharing buttons.\n\nWhat Create is to recipe cards, Grow Social is for marketing.\n\nGrow Social has a bright future here at Mediavine, but the most immediate goals are transitionary as Social Pug truly becomes Grow Social.\n\nThose plans include optimizations for speed and integration with the full array of Mediavine technologies, including\u2026\n\n*<strong>As of December 6, 2023, Grow Social and Grow Social Pro were acquired by NerdPress. In the first quarter, we plan on opening up the beta to many more publishers.\n\nAs we touched on in Austin, a slew of new features are coming to Trellis, which is what partially held back its release.\n\nAt Mediavine, we don\u2019t release products until they\u2019re truly ready and Trellis has simply taken a little longer to get there.\n\nWe\u2019ve added critical CSS generation, removing unused CSS, font optimizations, webp and jp2 generation and much more to ensure that Trellis sites hit the insane goals that Google PageSpeed Insights and Lighthouse have set for us.\n\nHad we released Trellis earlier and users couldn\u2019t hit those 90-plus pagespeed scores, that would&#8217;ve defeated the purpose.\n\nIn any event, we&#8217;re excited to say that when running Trellis, Create and the new pagespeed optimizations in Grow, our initial testers have reliably seen 95+ scores on mobile.
