href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavine-2020-preview-road-map-for-a-new-decade-of-video-and-much-more\/\">Mediavine 2020 road map<\/a>,\u00a0no topic is of greater concern and interest to the online advertising world as we head into the &#8217;20s than privacy.\n\nAs a leader is shaping this changing landscape, Google announced Tuesday that it plans to restrict and eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.chromium.org\/2020\/01\/building-more-private-web-path-towards.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">phase out the use of third-party cookies<\/a> in its popular Chrome web browser.<!--more-->\n\nIf you&#8217;re wondering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-are-cookies-and-why-do-they-matter-for-advertising\/\">what cookies are<\/a>, they are essentially small text files stored on a user&#8217;s device, designed to collect and retain data specific to a particular advertiser and\/or website.\n\nThird-party cookies, used by advertising or analytics providers, take this concept a step further, following users across the Internet to learn their browsing patterns and preferences.\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7453 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/gdpr-blogger.jpg\" alt=\"mobile blog reader\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" traditionally been the linchpin of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-programmatic-advertising\/\">programmatic advertising<\/a>, but are running up against mounting consumer privacy and security concerns.\n\nGoogle&#8217;s announcement that it is phasing out third-party cookies was seen as an inevitability, as the company seeks to shore up Chrome users\u2019 privacy while they browse the Internet.\n\nA post on Google&#8217;s Chromium blog describes a two-year phase-out process designed to give users, publishers and advertisers alike the opportunity to help reshape the ecosystem.\n\nIt will also provide time for the development of its new open source API. The goal of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chromium.org\/Home\/chromium-privacy\/privacy-sandbox\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Privacy Sandbox<\/a> will be to find ways of serving personalized ads while respecting privacy concerns.\n\nOptimizing ad performance while at the same time minimizing advertisers\u2019 access to some of the data that makes it easier to identify individuals, and thus their preferences, is no easy task.\n\nIt is, however, a necessary one.\n\nAs we&#8217;ve seen with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/gdpr-resource-hub\/\">GDPR<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-ccpa-what-do-mediavine-publishers-need-to-do-about-it\/\">CCPA<\/a>, users are demanding greater transparency, choice and control over how their data is used, trends that are only going to continue into the &#8217;20s.\n\nSome browsers (Safari, Firefox) have responded by blocking third-party cookies altogether, but Google believes its more nuanced, open-source approach will avoid unintended consequences.\n\nMore importantly, its vision &#8211; and Mediavine&#8217;s &#8211; is to not only preserve, but ultimately better the business model of ad-supported websites, <em>improving user control while serving better ads<\/em>.\n\nTo achieve this goal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavine-script-wrapper-2-0-is-live-heres-what-that-is-and-why-its-awesome\/\">Mediavine\u2019s Script Wrapper<\/a> offers a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavine-cmp-our-commitment-to-gdpr-transparency-and-privacy\/\">CMP<\/a> (Consent Management Platform) to help our publishers comply with new industry regulations and best practices.\n\nWe\u2019re also partnering with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavine-partners-with-gumgum-as-verity-early-adopter\/\">GumGum Verity<\/a> to offer contextual advertising to Mediavine\u2019s ad inventory, a subtle but crucial shift in traditional programmatic advertising functionality.\n\nIn a privacy-focused ecosystem, targeting content will be more sustainable &#8211; and probably more effective &#8211; than targeting individuals.
