The answer is unequivocally no. If anything it&#8217;s actually helping.\n\n<!--more-->\n<h3>How does that work?<\/h3>\nMediavine has been an Internet publisher since 2004, but began providing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-mediavine-ad-management-and-so-much-more\/\">ad management<\/a> a little over five years ago when we launched as a programmatic-first offering.\n\nWe eschewed the traditional route of direct sales, which involves selling individual impressions via insertion orders, collecting payment and everything else that a traditional sales team does.\n\nAs a computer engineer, I knew there was a better way.\n<h3>What does that mean?<\/h3>\nFive years ago, a relatively new way of transacting &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-programmatic-advertising\/\">programmatic advertising<\/a>, in which each ad was purchased digitally and in a real-time auction \u2014 was beginning to gain traction.\n\nI know, digital ads purchased digitally. What a novel concept.\n\nIt seems hard to believe, but this wasn&#8217;t common practice as recently as a few years ago. It&#8217;s relevant in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavine-2020-preview-road-map-for-a-new-decade-of-video-and-much-more\/\">2020<\/a> and to the topic of this article because it&#8217;s a combination of two factors:\n<ol>\n \t<li>Mediavine began building for scale as early as 2015.<\/li>\n \t<li>Our programmatic-first strategy means <strong>the more sites we add, the better the performance.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\nWhen advertisers transact programmatically, they&#8217;re typically looking for needles in haystacks \u2014 trying to find the exact users they want across billions of people surfing the trillions of pages.\n\nIt&#8217;s as easy as it sounds (not at all), which means they need <strong>scale<\/strong>.\n\nIt takes a lot of users to find the specific ones they want, and the more high-quality publishers with premium inventory we represent in relevant areas, the more we&#8217;re able to command in the market.\n<h2>Open Marketplace: Why More is More<\/h2>\nAdvertisers typically buy on the &#8220;open marketplace,&#8221; or across the entire web. This is where a majority of buying occurs, and it&#8217;s become a more trusted and reliable process thanks to movements like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/ads-txt-prevent-ad-fraud-use\/\">Ads.txt<\/a>.\n\nWhen advertisers buy on the open marketplace, they transact on a per-domain basis.
