The Foundation of Programmatic (and Mediavine) Ads<\/h1>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-content-justification-center is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-9b38c6d9 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);margin-bottom:0;padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0\"><div style=\"margin-bottom:0;margin-top:0;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;\" class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-post-author-name\">The Mediavine Team<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u2022<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0;padding-left:0;padding-right:0;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;\" class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-post-date has-10-font-size\"><time datetime=\"2020-04-23T06:30:34-05:00\">April 23, 2020<\/time><\/div><\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<section class=\"wp-block-group alignfull has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s hard to overstate the extent to which programmatic advertising has altered the media buying landscape in the last decade. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the early 2010s, people asked, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-programmatic-advertising\/\">what is programmatic advertising<\/a>?&#8221; But the truth is, at least online, programmatic <em>is<\/em> advertising.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<!--more-->\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is, in large part, thanks to the open marketplace, a.k.a. the open exchange, or to the cool kids, &#8220;The Open&#8221; or simply &#8220;Open.&#8221;<\/span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14679 size-mv_create_no_ratio\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/rawpixel-778690-unsplash-735x490.jpg\" alt=\"group of people on their smartphones\" width=\"735\" height=\"490\">\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Previously, when we discussed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-pmp-private-marketplace-deals-from-mediavines-perspective\/\">private marketplace<\/a>, or PMP, we talked about buyers and sellers working together in this space.<\/span>\r\n\r\nWhile PMP has advantages for more discerning buyers, and has carved out a necessary place in the programmatic ecosystem, it&#8217;s not where the bulk of transactions take place.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In contrast, the open marketplace does not require any contact or negotiations between ad buyers or sites selling ads.&nbsp;<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Publishers are connected to the marketplace via programmatic technology that passes information to buyers, such as domain, ad type (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/video-overlays-non-linear-ads\/\">video<\/a> or display), ad size, operating system, minimum bid allowed, etc.&nbsp;<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other end of this virtual transaction, advertisers can select the audience they wish to target, with the aid of metrics such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/ad-viewability-the-why-and-how-to-make-your-ads-more-viewable\/\">ad viewability<\/a>, click-through rates and other site data to help price their bids.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Private marketplace deals share the same technical infrastructure as the open, but the difference is volume. Tens of thousands of advertisers buy on the open marketplace, compared to only a few hundred via PMP.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond volume, the key to The Open&#8217;s appeal is efficiency. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An advertiser can look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-mediavine-travel-a-roadmap-for-long-term-success\/\">Mediavine travel<\/a> blogs, for instance, then they can target visitors to those sites all over the world, or even zero in on a smaller core of visitors, like &#8220;vegans in Paducah, Kentucky,&#8221; within a few minutes. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before programmatic altered the industry, this kind of targeting could have taken days, even weeks. If we build it, they will come.<\/span>\r\n\r\nAs we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavine-requirements-why-our-application-process-yields-the-best-results\/\">onboard new websites<\/a> every week, our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-comscore-for-mediavine-publishers-a-bigger-deal-every-day\/\">Comscore<\/a> ranking continues to rise and buyers increasingly respect Mediavine as the largest, brand-safe, exclusive publishing community online.&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, in the last five years, we have been selected to alpha and beta
