But how often?\n\nGlad you asked. This week, we&#8217;re breaking down keyword density, or how frequently to deploy your keyphrase without overdoing it.\n<div class=\"video-responsive\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GK9XqaewBHU\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<!--more-->\n<h2>What is keyword density?<\/h2>\nKeyword density, in general terms, is what it sounds like.\n\nThe density is how often your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-a-keyword\/\">keyphrase<\/a> is used relative to the total number of words on a particular page, by percentage.\n\nHow that percentage is calculated may vary, however.\n\nThere are actually two formulas used by the SEO community to calculate keyword density, which we&#8217;ll explain below.\n<h3>Formula One: Splitting the keyword<\/h3>\nLet&#8217;s say your keyword is a two-word phrase. Using this method, those two words are split up and therefore, count individually toward the overall density calculation.\n\nTake my delicious go-to example of &#8220;cheesecake recipe.&#8221; If my post is 500 words long and I only mentioned &#8220;cheesecake recipe&#8221; once, the density would be 2\/500, or 0.4%.\n<h3>Formula Two: No split required<\/h3>\nIn this model, the entire keyphrase is counted as one word, whether it&#8217;s one word, two, or several. If we said &#8220;cheesecake recipe&#8221; once in a 500-word article, we&#8217;d be at 1\/500, or 0.2%.\n\nYou can see how these two formulas produce wildly different percentages based on the number of words \u2014 which will usually be the case, especially if you&#8217;re (wisely) going after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/long-tail-keywords\/\">long-tail keywords<\/a>.\n<h3>Which formula should I use?<\/h3>\nIt doesn&#8217;t really matter, because the important takeaway is that keyword density is a percentage \u2014 the number of times you use your keyword in your content, relative to its length.\n\nPersonally, I lean towards the latter, or calling it all one &#8220;word.&#8221;\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17791 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Backlinks-15.jpg\" alt=\"Keyword Density: Learn what it is, how to optimize your posts, and avoid keyword stuffing. - Mediavine Pinterest image\" width=\"735\" height=\"1102\" data-pin-title=\"What is keyword density?\" data-pin-description=\"Learn all about keyword density: what it is, how to optimize your posts and avoid keyword stuffing. \" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Backlinks-15.jpg 735w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Backlinks-15-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Backlinks-15-307x460.jpg 307w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px\" \/>\n<h2>What is the ideal keyword density?<\/h2>\nWe&#8217;re actually not going to give out a specific percentage ourselves, but the popular Yoast SEO tool recommends between 0.5% and 3%.\n\nIf you&#8217;re writing for those green lights, you&#8217;ll have to be in that zone. Most other SEO analysts land somewhere in this range, as well.\n\nEnding up between 0.5-3% on a 1,000-word blog post means that you should be using your keyphrase anywhere from 5-30 times.\n\nThat&#8217;s a pretty broad range, to be sure, but it&#8217;s typically safe. (I&#8217;d definitely stay away from the higher end, but more on that later.)\n\nThe reason we don&#8217;t personally recommend a certain density percentage is thanks to the company we turn to for SEO guidance.\n\nGoogle flat out tells you <em>not<\/em> to write for a keyword density.\n<h2>How Google thinks about keyword density<\/h2>\nYou can hear Matt Cutts (formerly of Google) answer &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Rk4qgQdp2UA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">What is the ideal keyword density of a page<\/a>?&#8221; in detail on the Google Webmasters YouTube channel, or read our quick summary here.\n\nAs far as Google is concerned, the first one or two uses of your keyphrase will help with your ranking. If you&#8217;re nearing the high end of keyword density ranges \u2014 or worse, exceeding them \u2014 you&#8217;re running the risk of <strong>keyword stuffing.<\/strong>\n\nWhat is it?\n\nKeyword stuffing is when you use keywords in an unnatural way, either because you think it legitimately helps with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-seo-introducing-the-mediavine-search-engine-optimization-series\/\">search engine optimization<\/a> or because you&#8217;re trying to game the system.\n\nEither way, it&#8217;s a form of web spam and will earn you a Google penalty.\n\nNote: If your keyword density is 4%, you&#8217;re not automatically keyword stuffing or incurring penalties. Not at all. However, it could be an indicator that you should rethink your approach.\n\nThis is why we trust Google&#8217;s nuanced approach. If you&#8217;re keyword stuffing, you or anyone reading your content should be able to tell. Does it really sound natural everywhere you used your keyword?\n\nThink back to those writing classes where we were taught to use synonyms for words and not repeat them. Do you use your keyword multiple times in the same sentence or paragraph?\n\nIf so, you may want to enlist your favorite online thesaurus. A great example is in this blog post. An alternative word I can use for keyword is keyphrase. For density? Frequency.\n\nBut most importantly, the advice I always give is <strong>don&#8217;t stress<\/strong>. Write for your readers.\n\nIf you&#8217;re writing naturally and using keywords where they belong, organically, you&#8217;re not keyword stuffing. If you&#8217;re trying to shoehorn them in so often that it&#8217;s changing how you write, then you probably are.\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11093 size-mv_create_no_ratio\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/designer-desk-735x490.jpg\" alt=\"Macbook Pro laptop and smartphone on a desk \" width=\"735\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/designer-desk-735x490.jpg 735w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/designer-desk-441x294.jpg 441w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/designer-desk-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/designer-desk-690x460.jpg 690w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/designer-desk.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px\" \/>\n<h2>Should you worry about keyword density?<\/h2>\nYes, but again, we encourage you to think about this the Mediavine way.\n\nMake sure you use keywords in your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/page-title-tags\/\">page title<\/a>, first paragraph, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/meta-description\/\">meta description<\/a>, ideally one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/improve-rpm-and-seo-with-headings\/\">heading<\/a> and maybe a few times throughout your post.\n\nBasically, follow the advice we gave about keyword prominence, and sprinkle your keyword in there maybe an extra time or two on a long article.\n\nAs long as you&#8217;re writing between 500-1,000 words and using that phrase naturally, <strong>you&#8217;ll never be at risk<\/strong> of keyword stuffing.\n\nDon&#8217;t obsess over percentage ranges or including certain phrases beyond the prominent areas described above. Don&#8217;t stress. You&#8217;ll naturally use the words enough times to appease Google and readers alike.\n\nEven better? That thesaurus may have indirect SEO benefits, too.\n\nIf you&#8217;re using different terms for the same thing, chances are people searching online are mirroring that behavior. As effective as real <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/keyword-research\/\">keyword research<\/a> is, plain old synonyms can be effective too.\n\nYou&#8217;ll likely be targeting additional long tail keywords without even trying. Who knows, maybe someone showed up on this article looking for &#8220;keyword frequency&#8221; without knowing the industry term.\n\nBe smart and mix it up.
