With this change effectively comes the phasing out of Google&#8217;s AMP requirements.\n\nThis means that current search features exclusive to AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages) like the Top Stories carousel will soon be available to regular, well-optimized mobile sites that meet the new requirements.\n\n<strong>Repeat: This is coming sometime in 2021<\/strong>, so there&#8217;s plenty of time to be ready. In the meantime, we&#8217;re here to help you prepare to optimize so you&#8217;re eligible for this critical Google search ranking change.\n\n<!--more-->\n<h2>What is Page Experience?<\/h2>\nPage Experience is actually a combination of existing ranking signals like Mobile-friendly, Safe browsing, HTTPS, no intrusive interstitials, and the recently announced Core Web Vitals.\n\nIf you&#8217;re not familiar with Core Web Vitals, you soon will be.\n\nGoogle Search Console now incorporates these metrics, and is already alerting publishers with warning messages regarding them. They&#8217;re also now incorporated into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/lighthouse-version-6-changes-whats-new-for-content-creators\/\">Lighthouse 6 and PageSpeed Insights<\/a>.\n\nThese are the new pagespeed metrics Google wants us all to hit. Our Director of Product Jordan Cauley wrote a great blog post explaining <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/lighthouse-6-web-vitals\/\">Core Web Vitals and what you should know about these metrics<\/a>, so please check that out.\n\nBasically, these new vital signs are the old PageSpeed Insights goals like First Input Delay, a revamped Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) and the brand new Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS).\n<h2>Is Page Experience a Ranking Factor?<\/h2>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/site-speed-driving-everyones-development-decisions\/\">Speed has been a ranking factor for years<\/a>, so it&#8217;s no surprise that Google is using Page Experience as a ranking factor as well. They&#8217;re also throwing down the gauntlet and flat out telling you it&#8217;s more important than ever.\n\nWhile Google Search will always prioritize good content, and that will always be my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/category\/seo-like-a-ceo\/\">SEO Like A CEO<\/a>\u00a0mantra, Google now says:\n<blockquote><a href=\"https:\/\/webmasters.googleblog.com\/2020\/05\/evaluating-page-experience.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">In cases where there are multiple pages that have similar content, Page Experience becomes much more important for visibility in Search.<\/a><\/blockquote>\nYou can&#8217;t get much more blunt than that, can you?\n\nCome 2021, Google is making Page Experience much more important than before, and it was already a big deal. But the biggest news of all to come out of this is the following:\n\nTop Stories, the section at the very top of Search Engine Result Pages, previously reserved for AMP pages, is about to open up to non-AMP pages that meet Page Experience requirements!\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18984 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Page-Experience-Pin-.png\" alt=\"Mediavine Pinterest image - Coming in a 2021 Google updateL The end of AMP Requirements\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1500\" data-pin-description=\"Google's 2021 Page Experience update marks the end of AMP requirements\" data-pin-title=\"The End of AMP Requirements in 2021\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Page-Experience-Pin-.png 1000w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Page-Experience-Pin--200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Page-Experience-Pin--307x460.png 307w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Page-Experience-Pin--768x1152.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/>\n<h2>Top Stories: The End of AMP?<\/h2>\nWe&#8217;ve long encouraged Mediavine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-amp-and-should-you-run-it\/\">publishers listed in Google News to run AMP<\/a>, because until now, that was the only way to be eligible for the Top Stories carousel: Being a Google News publisher and using AMP pages.\n\nThat was, prior to this change, the major SEO draw of AMP.\n\nYou&#8217;ll still have to be a Google News publisher to be eligible in 2021, but the other requirement will be a thing of the past with the advent of Page Experience guidelines taking the place of AMP pages.\n\n<em>So is this the end of AMP altogether?<\/em>\n\nYes and no. AMP is now just one way to hit your Page Experience goals, so by opening this up, AMP is now optional instead of required.\n<h2>So should you run AMP?<\/h2>\nWhile we fully support the goals of AMP, it&#8217;s not our ideal solution to pagespeed problems. We&#8217;d rather see publishers treat Page Experience as a first-class citizen across their the entire websites, not just AMP pages.\n\nOur recommendation is to solve for Page Experience, thus maintaining full control of your site <em>and<\/em> only maintaining one site (AMP is basically a second version of your pages).\n\nIt&#8217;s just a better experience for publishers and users alike. Plus,<strong> it&#8217;ll make you a lot more money <\/strong>because, as your ad management company, we&#8217;ll have greater control over monetization.\n\n<em>Bottom line: If you solve for Page Experience, you won&#8217;t need AMP.<\/em>\n\n<figure id=\"attachment_13742\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13742\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13742 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/AdobeStock_189561598-1-e1590771789456.jpeg\" alt=\"high angle view photo of professional elegant office worker woman typing on mobile computer to making work report when she working at home.\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13742\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Great, So How Do I Hit These Page Experience Requirements?<\/h2>\nIf you&#8217;ve followed our advice over the years, you&#8217;ll have met a ton of the requirements already. You&#8217;ll have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mobile-first-indexing-emails-from-google-what-do-they-mean\/\">mobile-friendly<\/a>, secure site that&#8217;s free of mobile pop-ups. Plus, maybe you&#8217;ve heard us encouraging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavines-pagespeed-resources\/\">pagespeed<\/a>\u00a0a time or two.\n\nYou&#8217;re already starting from a good position, and we all have until next year to hit these new goals. Google is well aware that there&#8217;s a global pandemic going on and that all shifts of this nature require time and effort.\n\nWe&#8217;ll be working even more on the pagespeed modes in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavine-script-wrapper-2-0-is-live-heres-what-that-is-and-why-its-awesome\/\">Script Wrapper<\/a> to make sure they&#8217;re optimized for these new Web Vitals goals, and working on our plugins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/create-jump-to-recipe-is-here\/\">Create<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/social-pug-is-now-grow-mediavines-new-social-sharing-buttons-marketplace-more\/\">Grow<\/a> to ensure they are as well.\n\nAnd, you guessed it, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/introducing-trellis\/\">Trellis<\/a> will be built to help you hit the Web Vital scores you need.
