Here are four steps to planning a successful content calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>If you already have a content calendar, then you know that they are a great way to keep track of upcoming content on your blog. This post will help you add some new strategies to your planning process that incorporates SEO along with your creative passions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have kept a calendar for years for my blog <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/feastandwest.com\" target=\"_blank\">Feast + West<\/a>, and I helped create the calendar we use behind the scenes for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/meet-the-new-mediavine-com\/\">Mediavine blog<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is what helps me see all of my planned content at a glance and balance my creative passion with the SEO side of things. It&#8217;s all important for growing traffic and reader retention, but it has to be a balance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-you-don-t-have-a-content-calendar-yet\">If you don\u2019t have a content calendar yet&#8230;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no time like the present to start one! An editorial calendar can help you organize and plan upcoming content.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be thinking, \u201cI don\u2019t want more work!\u201d But as we head deeper into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-q4\/\">Q4<\/a>, a content calendar can help more than hinder. If something already works well for you, use that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few tools to try if you want to start fresh:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Asana <\/strong>\u2014 a robust tool that has to-do list and calendar features&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Airtable<\/strong> \u2014 a spreadsheet tool with calendar view&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>CoSchedule<\/strong> \u2014 calendar plugin geared at bloggers that integrates with WordPress and social media<\/li><li><strong>InfluenceKit<\/strong> \u2014 calendar tool geared at bloggers that integrates with social media&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Microsoft Excel<\/strong> or <strong>Google Sheets<\/strong> \u2014 your basic spreadsheet tool<\/li><li><strong>Google Calendar<\/strong> \u2014 your basic digital calendar tool&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>A paper planner or calendar<\/strong>, if you\u2019re old school and prefer that method!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Airtable is what I use for my own blog and what our team uses for the Mediavine blog as well. It is similar to Google Sheets (which I have used, and loved, for my editorial calendar in the past) but Airtable can do so much more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I love how it can connect data points from tab to tab and that you can toggle on different views, like turning your spreadsheet into a calendar. Make a to-do list of cornerstone content.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Blog content should always be a mixture of cornerstone content and new seasonal content aimed at your readers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/cornerstone-content\/\">Cornerstone content<\/a>, which our CEO Eric Hochberger wrote about in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/category\/seo-like-a-ceo\/\">SEO Like A CEO series<\/a>, is the content that\u2019s the foundation of your blog. He says:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The idea is that you\u2019re going to write a ton of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/long-tail-keywords\/\">long tail keyword<\/a>-driven content to support the cornerstone content.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, I write a lot about cocktails on my blog, so I am often planning more drink content for my readers. Within that category, I have various topics that I am always working on expanding.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this example, my cocktails category is my cornerstone content, and each new post I write is supporting content that links back to my cocktails category. Plan seasonal content.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Evergreen, seasonal content is key to keeping readers engaged, and it can become content you share again in the future. For me, seasonal content is<em> also<\/em> the fun stuff! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it all has to be a balance, so if your seasonal content is also supporting your cornerstone content, that is even better!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re anything like me, you probably already have a super long list somewhere of blog posts you want to write, so check that out and pick out a few seasonally appropriate ideas that you\u2019re ready to tackle. As always, do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/keyword-research\/\">keyword research<\/a> for every post so it has the best chance of performing well in Search.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for some new ideas, <a href=\"https:\/\/trends.google.com\/trends\/?geo=US\">Google Trends<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/trends.pinterest.com\/?country=US\">Pinterest Trends<\/a> are both great tools for looking at seasonal content that\u2019s already generating buzz. (We have a great post about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-is-google-trends-and-how-do-we-use-it\/\">how to use Google Trends<\/a> written by our co-founder Amber Bracegirdle that is worth checking out.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And remember, seasonal content performs better the earlier you can post it. Make a schedule (and stick to it).<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have these two lists made, start planning. Make sure to grab a mixture of the cornerstone content and seasonal content.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure you also plan for any other tasks you need to do, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/optimizing-your-most-valuable-content\/\">updating old content<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavine-video-the-ultimate-guide-even-if-you-dont-have-any-video\/\">creating video<\/a>,<strong> <\/strong>scheduling to social media or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/grow-is-first-party-data-newsletter-signups-are-not\/\">drafting a newsletter<\/a> to send out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sticking to a schedule is important, but of course you can be flexible if you need to. The important thing is to regularly post as often as you can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-often-to-post-on-your-website\">How often to post on your website<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The short answer: <\/strong>Post any time you have content ready.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The long answer: <\/strong>Google will always eventually recognize when you have new content, but it will learn to crawl your site more regularly if you can stick to a routine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>News sites will push content out as often and quickly as possible. Multiple times a day is ideal for this type of site and will keep the Googlebot crawling often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blogs tend to have a cadence of days and times they will post. A few posts a week is ideal. Every day is even better.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google will learn to crawl your site multiple times a week and your new content will be indexed faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-to-post-on-your-website\">When to post on your website<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Always, always, always check the data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a look at your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/how-to-find-sessions-in-google-analytics\/\">Google Analytics<\/a> as well as any analytics offered by your social media platforms to help you determine the days and times when you can reach the biggest audience with your new posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"689\" height=\"460\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/AdobeStock_189561598-1-689x460.jpeg\" alt=\"woman typing on laptop next to papers scattered on desk birds eye view\" class=\"wp-image-13742\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-go-forth-and-get-ahead\">4. In the past I have used this method to get ahead in my blog posts:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If I can feasibly put together three posts a week, I will publish two on Week 1 and save the third to publish on Week 2.<\/li><li>On Week 2, I will write three more posts. I will publish the one leftover from Week 1 and one of the ones I wrote on Week 2. Then Week 3 already has two posts ready to go!&nbsp;<\/li><li>On Week 3, I\u2019ll write 3 more posts to stay ahead, and get me into Weeks 4 and 5.&nbsp;<\/li><li>By Week 4, I\u2019ll have content ready for Week 6, which means I will have two weeks of content ready to go!&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can alter that strategy however works for your calendar.
