big on first-party data as the premiere solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As such, it\u2019s no surprise that one of the top industry publications, Digiday, has added a Best First-Party Data Strategy category to its annual awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, we\u2019re excited to announce that Mediavine\u2019s own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/grow-me-and-first-party-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Grow<\/a> has been nominated for the <a href=\"https:\/\/digiday.com\/awards\/complex-networks-harvard-business-review-and-in-the-know-are-2021-digiday-media-awards-nominees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inaugural 2021 Best First-Party Data Strategy award<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re one of just six nominees for the honor and the <em>only<\/em> representative among ad management companies or independent publishers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside Mediavine among the nominees are other ad tech heavyweights such as Criteo and Merkle and only one other publisher \u2014 Vox Media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below, we&#8217;ll break down why this is a big deal \u2014 not our nomination, though we&#8217;re happy about it \u2014 but the importance of what it is we&#8217;ve been working so hard Important?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When we talk about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/google-chrome-to-phase-out-third-party-cookies-as-privacy-concerns-reshape-ecosystem\/\">end of third-party cookies<\/a>, we\u2019re also talking about saying goodbye to third-party data as we currently know it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, advertisers could target audiences by purchasing what are called audience segments, powered via third parties such as Bluekai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These segments were collected behind the scenes as users browsed the web, all without consent, unless required by regulations (looking at you, EU and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavine-cmp-our-commitment-to-gdpr-transparency-and-privacy\/\">GDPR<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without third-party cookies, there\u2019s only one person who can reliably build such data segments and relationships with readers \u2014 the first party, or you, the publisher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a post-cookie world, data collection will be limited to a single domain. In order to accurately link that user or collect data, you\u2019ll need to obtain permission explicitly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can be done by collecting something like their email address or through another way of having them agree to be linked across domains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re already confused and\/or overwhelmed, we don\u2019t blame you. Creating and packaging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/first-party-data-grow-me\/\">first-party data<\/a> is not a small-scale operation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With third-party cookies and data, we could rely on billion-dollar companies (Bluekai is owned by Oracle, true story). Now, the onus is on publishers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As independent publishers with already limited resources, how do we shoulder the burden of something as complex and labor-intensive as first-party data generation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as importantly, how do we reach the kind of scale that advertisers require in order to find their respective needles in the haystack of users?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oracle\u2019s Bluekai could operate across millions of sites behind the scenes. Now we essentially need our own coalitions of sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, you can see this is not a small undertaking \u2014 and this is a long way of saying that you need a strategic partner like Mediavine and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/grow-me-and-first-party-data\/\">Grow<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as we revolutionized ad management for independent publishers, we\u2019re doing it again for first-party data, and we\u2019re excited for industry recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But awards are unimportant compared to helping publishers understand this strategy. But how will it do that?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Grow is all about the relationship with your readers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not just slapping a paywall \/ freewall in front of your readers and calling it a day. It\u2019s about creating a better browsing <em>and<\/em> advertising experience on your site.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means giving you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/grow-me-save-recipe-button-available-in-wp-recipe-maker\/\">additional features<\/a> to enhance the experience and encourage readers to log in and being up front about how their data will be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike the third-party cookie and solutions of the past, Grow is transparent. Readers are asked to consent to personalized ads before any data is collected or shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note that this doesn\u2019t just apply to the EU and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/gdpr-resource-hub\/\">GDPR<\/a> laws. A large number \u2014 probably a vast majority \u2014 of users won\u2019t log in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we continue to build up features like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/grow-me-introducing-subscribe-and-the-spotlight-widget\/\">Subscribe<\/a>, we\u2019re slowly increasing the percentage of users that log in. But even then, our ambitious goal is 5-10%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What about the other 90-plus percent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we mentioned before, in order to generate first-party data across multiple sites, you will need a consent model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s where Grow \u2014 as a single coalition shared amongst all publishers \u2014 is pivotal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll be attempting to replicate many of the audience groups and interest segments that advertisers have previously felt comfortable buying on. But in order to attain the scale they need, we\u2019ll also need to rely on solutions such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/contextual-advertising\/\">contextual<\/a> data and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/google-doubles-down-on-privacy-sandbox-and-first-party-data-thats-a-good-thing\/\">Privacy Sandbox<\/a> initiatives such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/grow-me-floc-testing-underway-at-mediavine\/\">FLoC<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/privacy-playground\/\">Privacy Playground<\/a> magically becomes real, we&#8217;re betting big with Grow and its plethora of first-party data strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-opt-in-today\"><strong>Opt in Today<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The best thing you can do to get ahead of the curve re: first-party data is to travel back in time and begin this process five years ago.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Absent a DeLorean with a flux capacitor, the next best thing is starting today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What many of your competitors are doing \u2014 waiting until the 11th hour, in hopes that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/what-are-cookies-and-why-do-they-matter-for-advertising\/\">cookies<\/a> somehow survive, or someone else solves this \u2014 is not a viable solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as it takes time to build relationships with readers, it takes time for us to develop the tools needed for Grow to help you do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sooner you begin, the more relationships you\u2019ll build, the more first-party data you\u2019ll have and the more valuable your traffic will be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t just try to cover your losses when they occur.
