We\u2019re able to use direct lines in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/ads-txt-exposing-resellers\/\">ads.txt<\/a>, form direct relationships with buyers (as opposed to through intermediaries), get featured in allowlists, and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put more simply: Because of how we present ourselves in ads.txt, we can work with larger buyers as a publisher and not as a reseller. Mediavine publishers are treated as premium publishers, and compensated accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, this type of treatment was reserved for top ComScore 100 companies. (Think: Disney). Now, we &#8211; Mediavine, and Mediavine publishers &#8211; are among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/mediavine-an-independent-internet-giant\/\">top 20 Internet Giants<\/a> according to ComScore.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That came from exclusivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a reason why, from a demand side perspective, resellers and ad networks historically have a worse reputation than publishers. That sales pitch doesn\u2019t take into account the cost of selling that inventory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mediavine works incredibly hard to protect the value of your inventory. Our placements and auction dynamics not only make sure you get paid the most per impression, but ensure we deliver optimal value to advertisers in return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason that the world\u2019s top advertisers continue spending on Mediavine sites is that it works. It maximizes value. Once you start allowing third parties to start selling that same inventory, you\u2019ll quickly devalue it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cheap Reach, or Cheap Media<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jounce Media, a supply path consultant, coined the phrase \u201ccheap reach\u201d to describe these exact type of arrangements in their <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/553c03d0e4b08cd58585d2ec\/t\/6410604fbf6ffd48ffb18f1d\/1678794832858\/The+Marketer%27s+Guide+To+Supply+Path+Optimization.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Supply Path Optimization guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Jounce, \u201cCheap Reach inventory is chronically non-viewable, requiring out of the ordinary user behavior to be seen. These placements most commonly coexist with other high quality placements on premium publisher pages, making them hard to avoid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Translation: Cheap reach, or cheap media, shows up in places where the users are unlikely to actually see or interact with it. Such ads rely on the high performance of other advertising on a publisher\u2019s website in order to dupe advertisers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put even more simply, these companies charge less than Mediavine would on your site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, when a buyer purchases inventory via cheap reach <em>and<\/em> through Mediavine, domain level reporting on their end can&#8217;t differentiate between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that in the short term, the quality of your Mediavine inventory brings up the performance of cheap reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emphasis on the short term. It won\u2019t last. In fact, it will end up causing more harm than good before long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may not see a drop in your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/ad-viewability-the-why-and-how-to-make-your-ads-more-viewable\/\">viewability<\/a> in your Mediavine dashboard. If you\u2019re running ads with cheap reach in a third-party environment, the impact won\u2019t be measurable as far as Mediavine ads are concerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the question becomes: If you still have 70%+ viewability and advertisers love your inventory, what\u2019s the problem with doing this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider the advertisers\u2019 perspective. They are still buying more impressions thinking they\u2019re getting that 70%+ viewability and great performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their algorithms start heading towards cheap media because that\u2019s the cheapest source for what they think is the same, high-value inventory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t theoretical; it impacts flooring (the minimum amount advertisers will pay for your inventory) in a tangible way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a cheaper avenue for advertising on your site becomes available, advertisers will gravitate towards that. Make sure you are not modifying your ads.txt. Mediavine should be serving and controlling your ads.txt. If someone is asking for access to add a line there?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Say hello \u2014 and then say goodbye \u2014 to your Cheap Media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep your inventory valuable.
