All of it plays a big part in how your brand comes off to readers and potential sponsors. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your website is your storefront, and how it looks makes all the difference in getting people in the door. The design of your site can play a big part in how you earn, too. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m Susannah, and I work in Publisher Support here at Mediavine, so I look at sites all day long. Before I worked here I ran my own freelance graphic design business and I also have a bachelor\u2019s degree in graphic design. I will happily nerd out about fonts to anyone who dares! <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That also means I get it when publishers want to spice things up. A theme change is a great way to give your site a facelift without an (often disastrous) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/why-rebranding-is-bad-for-business\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rebrand of your URL<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just about every day, one of our publishers pushes an update to their theme, and sometimes we see changes that affect the way a site can earn. Sometimes it\u2019s positive, and ads perform even better, earning the publisher more money. But other times, the new theme can have a negative impact on earnings.<\/span>\n<h3>How does your site design affect your Mediavine ads?<\/h3>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the most part, we can work with almost any theme. But here are a few designer tips for choosing a theme that will be both beautiful AND earn you all the $$$:<\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4942\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/designer.png\" alt=\"A woman compares color swatches while designing promotional materials.\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/designer.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/designer-441x294.png 441w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/designer-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/designer-690x460.png 690w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>\n<h4><b>A sidebar <\/b><\/h4>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most sites get a lot more mobile traffic than desktop these days, but the desktop traffic still plays a key role in your overall traffic and ad revenue. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advertisers tend to spend more on desktop readers, because they are engaged. Plus, there\u2019s no sidebar on mobile, so the addition of this content area provides more \u2018real estate\u2019 for ads. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our sticky sidebar ad stays in view as a reader scrolls, and refreshes every 30 seconds with premium content, so that ad will keep earning for you the longer a reader stays on a page of your site. Our ads need a sidebar that\u2019s at least 300 px wide. It\u2019s important that the sidebar doesn\u2019t shrink to smaller than that when the browser window size is adjusted.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you choose a design without a sidebar, we can still work with you, but it can affect your earning potential with readers on desktop.<\/span>\n\nWe also recommend a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/rethinking-the-sidebar-less-is-more-for-rpm-ux-alike\/\">short sidebar<\/a>, in terms of how much content you include, because of that sticky quality. The sooner the ad comes into view, the sooner it can start earning for you.\u00a0Use a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/using-heat-maps\/\">heat map plugin<\/a>\u00a0to help you determine how your users are using your sidebar, and make changes based on what you learn.\n<h4><b>Responsive design<\/b><\/h4>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because most readers are on mobile these days, it\u2019s very important to have a site that is mobile responsive. This is key for SEO too, as Google cares about user experience and whether mobile readers can get the most out of your site. Take Google\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/search.google.com\/test\/mobile-friendly\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mobile-Friendly Test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0to test how easy it is for a visitor to use your page on a mobile device.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are some solutions out there, like WP Touch, that can force a mobile site, but it\u2019s best if your theme has one automatically.<\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4943\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/redesign-1.png\" alt=\"A woman types at a laptop computer.\" width=\"600\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/redesign-1.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/redesign-1-434x300.png 434w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/redesign-1-768x531.png 768w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/redesign-1-665x460.png 665w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>\n<h4><b>Site speed <\/b><\/h4>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new theme can absolutely affect your site speed scores, which can ultimately affect your ad revenue. They might have image elements that aren\u2019t optimized, or maybe they have a built-in feature (such as lazy loading or a post builder) that doesn\u2019t monetize well. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you change themes, be sure to run through your site through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/speed\/pagespeed\/insights\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Page Speed Insights<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and make note of your mobile and desktop scores. Once you\u2019ve made the switch, check your scores again to make sure they\u2019re not crazy off.<\/span>\n\nYou can implement a tool like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/google-page-speed-optimize-images-with-short-pixel\/\">Short Pixel<\/a> to help you optimize your images, and tackle some of the other line items\u00a0by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/improve-site-speed-and-gpsi-score\/\">following these tips<\/a>. We also recommend working on a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/how-to-do-a-plugin-self-audit\/\">plugin self-audit<\/a>\u00a0to make sure you aren&#8217;t running any extraneous plugins on your site.\n<h4><b>Font size<\/b><\/h4>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember high school? And how easy it was to get your paper a little closer to five pages just by setting your type to 12.5-point type instead of 12-point? Same rule applies here. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of our in-content logic, your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/increase-font-size-and-increase-seo-rpm-along-with-it\/\">font size<\/a> can absolutely affect your ability to earn with in-content ads. Increasing your font size or line height by even just 1-2 pixels can make a difference in how long your post is, improve in-content ad placement and the health of your sticky sidebar ad.<\/span>\n\nWe recommend setting your font size to 18px.\n<h4>Line height<\/h4>\nSimilarly to font size, your site&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/increase-your-line-height-and-improve-rpm-and-readability\/\">line height<\/a> \u2014 or the space between the lines of text \u2014 can also help lengthen your content and increase your ad earnings.\n\nWe recommend setting your line height to 1.5 em.\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8883\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Redesign-Checklist.png\" alt=\"How to choose a Mediavine Ad-Friendly Website Design checklist.\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Redesign-Checklist.png 735w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Redesign-Checklist-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Redesign-Checklist-307x460.png 307w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>\n<h4><b>The gist? <\/b><\/h4>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When choosing a theme for your site, the main things to consider are<\/span>\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a sidebar that&#8217;s at least 300 pixels wide, and doesn&#8217;t shrink to smaller than that,<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a speedy, responsive design that includes a great mobile view,<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and that your content itself is formatted in a way that is ad-friendly.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That last bullet is key \u2014 a lot of times it doesn\u2019t matter what your site looks like as long as it is formatted well for ads. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We offer our site health checks in our dashboard to help you keep an eye on things.
