We wear our pajama pants to virtual meetings, make our own hours and can do a load of laundry in the middle of the work day.\n\nBut if you&#8217;re anything like the Mediavine team, it can also come with a big challenge: SEPARATION of job (church) and home (state).\n\nOne of the best strategies we rely on to maintain sanity is organization, and for that, we&#8217;re fortunate to have specialist Sara Volk. I was in charge of producing and organizing content for everything that wasn\u2019t the paper itself, including magazines that varied in genre from hunting to interior design.\n\nThe position had me wearing a dozen different hats \u2014 I wrote articles and organized other content; I managed our publication calendars; I ran social media pages; I organized giveaways; I worked with sponsors; I planned events; I represented the magazines to potential advertisers and sponsors; and so on. These are hats that online content creators juggle for their own businesses every day.\n\nSo what was my secret to keeping all of this in the air without dropping anything? I stay, to quote one of my coworkers, \u201cpainfully organized\u201d. But here\u2019s the real secret: it isn\u2019t all that painful. Better yet, getting your work life organized keeps you productive, lowers your stress, and ultimately saves you immense amounts of time and effort.\n\nYou can fix a lot of common headaches through the clever use of organizational tools; and if you do it right, they\u2019ll become one of the best weapons in your arsenal. But before I jump into how you can make use of them, I wanted to share my biggest piece of organizational advice: <em><strong>Your organization system should work for you; you should not work for it.<\/strong><\/em>\n\nNothing is a one-size fits all, and you may find that different tools or tricks work better for you than what work for me. That\u2019s okay! The whole point of getting organized is making a system that makes sense to you. What are your priorities? Is your pain point organizing your social media? Maybe it\u2019s keeping track of events and conferences, remembering what you still have left to do by the end of the week, or finding crucial information quickly and easily?\n\nWrite down a list of areas where you find yourself struggling or wanting more structure. Visualizing the chaos makes taming it much more manageable!\n\nI personally use Google Calendar to keep track of work trips, project due dates, scheduling meetings, and much more. Not only is Google Calendar free, but it also has the benefit of tying in with a lot of third party applications \u2014 bonus! If you have a Google account and haven\u2019t been making use of the calendar feature yet, I highly recommend trying it out.\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6154\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/computer-desk.jpg\" alt=\"A clean desktop with open laptop computer, small stack of notebooks, and decorative items.\" width=\"601\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/computer-desk.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/computer-desk-441x294.jpg 441w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/computer-desk-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/computer-desk-689x460.jpg 689w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/>\n<h3>Tame the social media chaos<\/h3>\nCoSchedule is a wonderful app. Just saying. <a href=\"https:\/\/coschedule.com\/\">CoSchedule<\/a> is a tool that connects all your social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram \u2014 pick your poison) into one large hub, where it allows you to schedule and queue posts in an easy-to-use calendar format.\n\nThis makes cross-promotion for your latest blog post child\u2019s play, and is so much easier than using the queueing options for each individual social platform. You can even use it to schedule posts onto your blog and line up social media promotion with links that haven\u2019t even gone live yet!\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6144\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/CoSchedule_Calendar-857x460.png\" alt=\"A preview of a CoSchedule social media calendar.\" width=\"600\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/CoSchedule_Calendar-857x460.png 857w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/CoSchedule_Calendar-441x237.png 441w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/CoSchedule_Calendar-768x412.png 768w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/CoSchedule_Calendar.png 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>\n\nBeing able to see your social media schedule laid out in a calendar makes it much easier to balance your posting schedule and avoid dead zones where you aren\u2019t engaging with your audience, or find days when you\u2019re posting too much and need to re-prioritize what gets published when.\n\nThis is especially useful for Facebook, where a drop in engagement often coincides with a drop in traffic. (For more information on navigating Facebook\u2019s latest update, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/facebook-algorithm-updates-navigating-a-changing-landscape\/\">this awesome post<\/a> by Mediavine co-founder Steve Marsi!)\n<h3>Create a to-do list<\/h3>\nThis is an oldie, but a goodie. There\u2019s a reason why to-do lists are a staple; but it\u2019s about time that they got a bit of a facelift. While plenty of people get satisfaction from checking things off a physical to-do list, there\u2019s something I find very convenient about electronic versions.\n\nI can include all the details about the item I\u2019m checking off, keep track of events that are upcoming in a few months so I don\u2019t drop the ball and forget them completely, and even look through an archive of things I\u2019ve already checked off \u2014 unlike a physical to-do list that was taken out with the trash last week.\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6163\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/trello.png\" alt=\"An example of a Trello board.\" width=\"601\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/trello.png 2880w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/trello-441x228.png 441w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/trello-768x397.png 768w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/trello-889x460.png 889w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/>\n\nI use <a href=\"https:\/\/trello.com\/\">Trello<\/a> to track my main to-do list, as well as to organize individual projects \u2014 especially those I need to share with other people. Trello is easy to use, with a simple list and card system that is surprisingly flexible. I also use its description function to add in additional details, such as the reservation numbers and arrival times for the 14-person team going on a retreat next week or notes to remind me on the details I wanted to cover in a certain blog post.\n\n(Besides Trello, there are dozens of apps out there; I\u2019ve also used <a href=\"https:\/\/asana.com\/\">Asana<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/monday.com\/\">Monday<\/a> at Mediavine and like them, but you should definitely try several options and figure what will work best for you.)\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6142\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/desk-space.jpg\" alt=\"A desk sits in the corner of a light with plenty of natural light. I only use Trello, CoSchedule and Google Calendar in order to keep track of everything I do at Mediavine, along with an occasional sticky or hand-written note for little things.\n\nThe fewer places you have to check to find the information you need, the better chance you have of finding it quickly and easily. There are some Type A personalities (myself included) that idolize Instagram-worthy organizational heavens of color-coded and labeled perfection. We sigh happily at the idea of everything being aligned just so, pin the latest drawer organizer, and dream of having something that looks like it was straight out of a magazine shoot for our office space.\n\nThat kind of organization system takes upkeep \u2014 and can be overwhelming to the average person. While it\u2019s a great ideal to strive for, it may not be your cup of tea in practice. Which is why I stress keeping things functional, rather than ready for your next \u201cBefore and After\u201d shot.\n\n<figure id=\"attachment_6146\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6146\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6146\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/saras-desk.jpg\" alt=\"Sara's work station.\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/saras-desk.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/saras-desk-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/saras-desk-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/saras-desk-613x460.jpg 613w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6146\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sara&#8217;s desk<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\nMaybe it won\u2019t look like something magazine-worthy, but it will help keep your work space efficient and keep you from losing things in the inevitable jumble of papers, office supplies and technology.\n\nBelow are a few quick tips I use to keep my space tidy without going out of my way:\n\n<strong>Use organization caddies or spare cups to keep pens, scissors, and other office supplies in order.<\/strong> (If you want to go the extra mile, you could even use mugs featuring fun sayings, your favorite logos, or anything else that makes you smile to keep your work environment low-stress and happy!)\n\nI use a smaller organizer like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/DecoBros-Supplies-Organizer-Caddy-Black\/dp\/B00H5CVCN0\/ref=sr_1_6?s=office-products&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1526675861&amp;sr=1-6\">this one<\/a> to keep a collection of writing utensils, sticky notes, scissors and highlighters in check, and a larger one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Greenco-GRC2548-Supplies-Organizer-Compartments\/dp\/B01IROCEUY\/ref=sr_1_5?s=office-products&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1526675861&amp;sr=1-5\">like this<\/a> to hold envelopes, pads of scratch paper, thank you cards, return address labels, small technology items (such as cords and a rechargeable battery plugin), etc.\n\n<figure id=\"attachment_6147\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6147\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6147\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/jayjay.jpg\" alt=\"Sara's cat, a large grey tabby named JayJay, sitting on top of her work station.\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/jayjay.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/jayjay-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/jayjay-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/jayjay-345x460.jpg 345w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6147\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sara&#8217;s kitty, JayJay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<strong>Use baskets, bins and decorative boxes to organize things.<\/strong> You don\u2019t need to have everything organized and folded, but putting the clutter away into a basket kept on a shelf will be a lot less stressful than looking at a pile of cords and technology bits and bobs.\n\nIf it has a lid, you don\u2019t even have to worry so much about the cat stealing it and hiding it under the couch. They come in various sizes and shapes, and you can usually find them at craft and home goods stores for relatively cheap (though it never hurts to coupon-clip), and in whatever color will best suit your space. Some boxes (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Magnetic-Closure-Collapsible-Decorative-PACKHOME\/dp\/B077YH4G2W\/ref=sr_1_4?s=office-products&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1526677217&amp;sr=1-4\">like this one<\/a>) are even collapsible, so they\u2019re great if you have limited space!\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/p>\n<strong>Use hook and loop tape to keep cords from tangling while in use.<\/strong> This will save you so much time, it isn\u2019t even funny. There are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ikea.com\/us\/en\/catalog\/products\/30200253\/\">cord organizers that attach to the bottom of your desk<\/a> for a more permanent solution; but these are best used for things that will be stationary or rarely moved. You\u2019re a human being, and chances are you aren\u2019t going to file something as soon as you get it.\n\nWhether you use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ikea.com\/us\/en\/catalog\/products\/90198030\/\">hanging basket on the wall<\/a> or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Rolodex-Collection-Front-Load-Letter-Size-62523\/dp\/B000FGY8U2\/ref=cm_wl_huc_item\">desk tray<\/a>, have a place for physical papers to go when you receive them so they don\u2019t get lost or jumbled with old paper. Make a point of emptying that basket by the end of the week. This will keep stacks from overtaking the space that should be dedicated to things you\u2019re actively working on.\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6151\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/wastebasket.jpg\" alt=\"An overflowing trash can, along with several binders filled with paper.\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/wastebasket.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/wastebasket-441x294.jpg 441w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/wastebasket-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/wastebasket-690x460.jpg 690w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>\n\n<strong>File it when you need it, purge it when you don\u2019t.<\/strong> If you no longer need something, get rid of it. Periodically go through things (I generally do it twice a year, though you could easily make it a part of your spring cleaning routine if you\u2019d rather do it annually, or even quarterly).\n\nMake sure to shred anything that has possibly sensitive information (and when in doubt, just shred it). The point is, make it easier to find the things you need by getting rid of the things you don\u2019t.\n\n<strong>Put it away if you won\u2019t be using it in the near future.<\/strong> If you aren\u2019t using something (whether it\u2019s a pen or something as bulky as a sewing machine for all you crafters out there), put it away.\n\nIt can be tempting to just leave something out, but the clutter struggle is real if you make a habit out of it.
