An even wiser man told me years later that if we wanted our website to be successful, it would require a shift in approach, namely:\n\n<em>\u201cFocus on increasing revenue instead of traffic.\u201d<\/em>\n\nThe point of these memorable quotes isn\u2019t that traffic doesn\u2019t matter. Obviously, it does. Content needs an audience, and we\u2019re still trying to grow ours, year after year. But there isn\u2019t necessarily a correlation between increased traffic and increased revenue.\n\nThe first of these quotes illustrates the basic fact that advertisers only want to be associated with certain content and audiences. The second drives home the idea that even if your traffic is very desirable to advertisers, it may not be reaching its monetization potential.\n\nBoth exemplify the fact that generating additional traffic doesn\u2019t guarantee that you\u2019ll be able to monetize it at a consistent, proportional rate. All traffic won\u2019t monetize the same way for many reasons, some you can\u2019t control, but a number of which you can.\n<h3>Why doesn\u2019t all traffic monetize the same?<\/h3>\nA lot has changed since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/short-history-digital-advertising\/\">early days of online advertising<\/a>, as our Director of Ad Ops and historian Brad explained last week, but not the principal concept of advertising itself.\n\nWhether it\u2019s print, TV, or digital media, advertisers will always pay a premium to reach the audience most relevant to the product, business, service or message they&#8217;re putting out.\n\nOn the publishing side, every site has its own unique set of readers.
