The key is a weak bond embedded within the material. Zoom in close enough, and elastomers look like a jumble of loosely coiled strings or strands of spaghetti. Each strand is a long chainlike molecule called a polymer, with covalent bonds that hold neighbouring strands together. These chains are relatively bulky, so they don’t move much at normal temperatures. But under the right conditions, they can straighten out in the direction of force—elastomers then revert to their original, irregularly coiled state.

This process is known as plastic deformation, and it’s when elastomers really shine. Plastic deformation can be controlled to produce different types of elastomer, with specific properties such as abrasion resistance, resilience (i.e. how much the material absorbs and dampens) and oil and solvent resistance.
